Are you eligible for a Motability car?

To lease a car from Motability, you must be receiving either:

Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - currently £51.40 per week - or,
War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) - currently £57.40 per week.
If you choose to lease a car through Motability's Contract Hire scheme you must have at least 12 months' award length remaining.

Do you need to have a driving licence?

If you opt for our lease agreement you do not need to drive. You can nominate up to two drivers who may be friends or relatives, and parents or carers can apply on behalf of a child aged three years and upwards.

However, proposed drivers must not have any serious driving convictions, disqualifications, or endorsements within the last five years. There are also some restrictions on drivers under 25 and those with provisional licences.

Planning your dealer visit

To get the most out of your visit, it is worth planning ahead. This checklist may help you:

Decide what you want from a car using our Things to consider page for a list of some things to consider.
The online Car Search will enable you to make a list of your favourite vehicles.
Use our Find a Dealer tool to locate your closest Motability dealerships who offer the accessibility options you require. Choose the dealers you are most comfortable with and who offer the type of car that best suits your needs.
Book an appointment with the Motability specialist at each dealership to discuss your needs.
If you use a wheelchair, or any other mobility aid, take it with you when you visit the dealership so you can try the car out for size and comfort.
Wherever possible, always test drive or ride in every car you are considering.

Making the most of your Test Drive

A ‘round the block’ test drive may not be enough to make a decision about a car, so make sure the test drive is what you expect it to be.
Getting in and out of a car can be a struggle and often has a big impact on how suitable any given car is to your needs; so try getting in and out several times while in the dealership.
Take your time and get comfortable, the test drive is for you and for your benefit.
Check that the car doors are wide enough for you to get in and out easily, along with any equipment you may have, but that you are still able to reach the door to shut it when seated.
Check that the doors aren’t too heavy, making them hard to open and close.
If you are selecting a two-door car, make sure you can turn and stretch for the seat belt. It’s a lot further back in two-door cars than in a standard four-door car.
Drive on a number of different road types, and try different manoeuvres such as reverse parking to ensure the car’s performance is what you expect and that you are able to see from every angle.
Check that you are comfortable doing a hill start in the car.
Nominated drivers should also take the car for a test drive, but be careful not to let them over influence your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

A wide range of vehicles are currently available through the Motability Scheme, many at no more than the cost of your weekly mobility allowance. If you want to pay a little more you can increase your choice to a wider selection of models.
The advance payment is payable in one lump sum to your Motability dealer at the start of your Contract Hire lease.

Q. Why do some cars have advance payments and others don’t?
A. There are over 3,000 cars available on the Motability Scheme, ranging from small run-arounds to 4x4's. It is necessary for some larger or more expensive cars to have an advance payment as the mobility allowance does not cover the hire cost for the three year agreement. Advance payments can range from £50 up to several thousand pounds depending on the type of car chosen.

Q. How many cars are available on the Scheme with no advance payment?
A. There are currently over 250 cars available on the Motability Car Scheme which don’t require an advance payment - over 40 of these are automatic.

Q. How are advance payments calculated?
A. Our team of pricing experts negotiate with manufacturers on your behalf to get the best price for all Motability customers. The advance payment represents the difference between the amount your allowance covers over the three year agreement period and the overall cost of the car you choose. Each individual advance payment is calculated by considering different factors, such as the initial cost of the car, servicing and maintenance and the expected resale value of the car at the end of contract.

Q. What if the advance payment changes after I’ve ordered my car?
A. The advance payments are calculated every quarter. This means the advance payment on a car can change throughout the year. We operate a price guarantee, which means the advance payment of the car on the date you order it won’t change, even if it changes while you are waiting for the delivery of your car.
